Last Shift of 2022

Yesterday was the last shift of 2022 at work. And did we get to feel it. Holy Moly! 9 calls, 266 miles driven and 30 minutes late off. Dispatch completely slaughtered us. Have in mind, we were holding the wall (waiting for bed) at the hospitals for about an hour in total and we were staging for one call for over an hour. On top of that, periodically it was raining so bad I couldn’t drive faster than 50mph on a 70mph road… I was so tired when I got home, and so sore, it was unreal. I didn’t even make it to the horses because I was so exhausted.

As you may know, i love statistics… so the entire year I’ve written down how many calls we ran and how many miles we drove each shift. In total for 2022, I worked 194 shifts. I ran 724 calls which averages about 3.7 call/shift. And I have rolled 30,577 miles which is an average of 157.6 miles/shift!!! I bet I am the only nerd who can tell you those numbers! 😂 But it is quite interesting to see how much we do at the end of the year. And if you wonder for 2020, I only wrote down from july-december so it doesn’t really reflect the full year. Therefore I have nothing to compare with.

We will see what next year brings. That’s the charm with this job, you simply have no clue what the next 5 minutes will bring. Who you will meet, what will you face. I love that part of the job. The complete uncertain world. And like yesterday… we were staging for an hour waiting for law enforcement for this:

Thankfully someone had already given the patient a ride to a mental facility. I say thankfully simply because I think he/she got better care there since the hospitals were so crazy full. All of them went on divert and dispatch had to tell us where to go. It was no longer the patients choice. But I have to admit, it would have been a very interesting call…

Now is time to prepare for 2023… I have some routines and traditions that I started last year and I am going to do them again since 2022 turned out pretty darn good for me!
