Some calls at work are more interesting than others! I had picked up a shift in Mineola yesterday and on our way back from Tyler we were dispatched to the airport for a transfer. I had never been at the airport but thankfully my partner had. We had information about a military helicopter coming from out of state with a patient with a quite significant injury. We knew what the injury was, but I don’t want to disclose it here. Needless to say; we were on alert. The helicopter was too big to land on the hospital’s helipads which to us was a little weird but okay…
We were told the aircraft was about to land so it was lights and sirens the 10 minutes drive to the airport. But when we came to the airport, they did not know anything about a military helicopter in inbound and we even had the tail number but since it was a military they couldn’t track it… surprise surprise. So we sat there and waited for a couple of minutes and then in the distance we could see a black spot come full speed towards us and here it was! Not every day you have an army helicopter see you and land as close to you as it can…
Well then to our surprise, two guys jumps out of the aircraft and walks towards us. Quickly figured out that one at least was the medic but the other was the patient! Yes, his injury was serious but not far as serious that we had expected. That “military is flying in patient from out of state” adrenaline kick quickly subsided. And that is always good. When the patient can walk and talk it’s simply so much easier. So instead of a lights and sirens ordeal through Tyler we could go with normal traffic. But I was quite excited about seeing this bird land and take off. It is absolutely not every day you get to see!!!
