Living in a small town can have it’s pro’s and con’s. I dream about living in the country and having my horses just outside the window, not an hour away from me. But that is not affordable for me right now and I don’t foresee winning the lottery anytime soon even though I buy a ticket now and then.
Wills Point ain’t bad. Not at all. But it is a town. Neighbors, cars, sirens in the middle of the night and rules to follow in regards to when to mow the yard.
I don’t know too many people in Wills Point. I don’t hang out with anyone on a regular basis. I don’t work here, am not very active in the community and I have never performed here. But if you drive around town a lot you most likely have seen my car with music notes on at some point of you may have seen me walk with or without my dogs Twix and BamBam.
This morning I walked into one of our local donut stores, Tiger Donuts. I was wearing this year’s Back The Blue T-shirt. Another customer was ordering his food and he was wearing last year’s t-shirt from the same event. So I said “I like your t-shirt” and he looked at me and smiled. We had a short conversation about the event and then he asked “How are your dogs?” Wait what? Not really the question I expected but since I walk a lot with them he may have seen me around. Then he continues to ask if I still live at the intersection where I actually live. Thousands of thoughts are going through my head at this point. Who is this man? I know that I don’t know him but how does he know exactly where I live? Should I know this man? Then he continues to say something so sweet. “I work for the city so we are around and doing stuff all over town, I see you walk your dogs almost every day so we keep an eye on you so nothing happens”.
That was not what I expected to hear but it was words of kindness that came from his heart. In a small town people look out for each other. Of course he knows who I am, I wave to them when I see any city employee. But little did I know that they are looking out for me so I am safe. I think they look out for all citizens but that someone actually said it and in that kind way made me beyond grateful to live in Wills Point, TX.
