I came home yesterday and let the dogs out. After an hour approximately I let them back in and Twix suddenly had a huge red and watery right eye! I tried to take a look at it but he wouldn’t let me and screamed bloody murder as soon as I tried. I thought he could have poked it with a branch and I was worried that something was still in there. It was 6pm and Friday. How likely is it to find a vet at this time? I called my vet’s office to hear what they said on the answering machine. I have their cellphone numbers but I want to respect their privacy and not use it after hours. But the clinic they referred to is in Dallas so I figured I will text Dr. Rachel to see if there is any chance someone is still there. I was so lucky. She answered right away and Dr. Dan was still there and I could get over there right away. It would be an emergency charge but I couldn’t care less about money right now. If I have to dig in my emergency fund, this was an emergency.
Left BamBam at home and loaded Twix into the car and left right away. Dr. Dan was waiting for me when I got there and right away he said, “well here we’ve had a bee-party”. At this point some other spots had appeared over his eye that I had not seen earlier so this had most likely happened just before he came in. But being stung by a bee is much easier than a foreign object in the eye. he could have been bit by a snake but we couldn’t see any bite mark which makes me go with the bee sting theory. A cortisone shot and pain meds and less than 20 minutes later we were on our way home again.
Already after an hour Twix tried to open his eye again. He was still happy and behaving as normal but you could tell the eye was painful for him. It will be very interesting to see how we will manage the eye drop ordeal for five days. I think that I’ve come up with a technique that will work…
This event made me even more appreciate our local veterinarians. I’ve used Wills Point Vet (Dr. Dan & Rachel Turner) for the last couple of years and they are amazing. Yes, a little bit of luck for me that Dr. Dan was still there but Dr. Rachel was so kind to answer and help me on the phone, letting her husband about my situation. And when I got there, Dr. Dan helped Twix quickly so he could get some relief from his situation. I am so grateful to both of them for helping me. When I left there was another family coming with their goat so I wasn’t the only one needing help after hours, yet it is Friday night and they might have had plans. Thank you Dr. Dan and Dr. Rachel for always being there, both for our animals but also for us!!! Y’all are amazing!
