This was the week with a lot of new things happening. First of all, going from 24 hour shift to 12 hours. Already now after 2 shifts… I love it! I came home after my shift, still had time to do my work out and walk with the dogs, watch some TV or whatever before I went to bed. Yes… to see this on your phone when you go to bed is not really fun but I am a morning person so it isn’t super bad after all…
New station means new town. I now work out of Athens, TX. We cover the entire Henderson County but we are several trucks here. In Mineola we could easily run 10 calls in our first 12 hours and we had at least 30 minutes to the hospital on each call. On my first shift in Athens we had in total 3 calls… the second day, yesterday; 4 calls. That is 7 calls in 2 days. That is less than what we did the first couple of hours in Mineola. I love it! The rest of the day is just posting so we are sitting in the truck playing on our phones, reading a book, watching TV or just driving around. Yes a little boring but if you know that and you have things you can do in between, it is all good. I at least come home after work and I am not exhausted. Yesterday we came back to the station one hour late. Suddenly it wasn’t a big deal. I wasn’t tired, it was still just 5pm.
The challenge for me in Athens is that I don’t find myself around yet. I don’t know where all the posts are. We have many more posts here in Henderson County than we had in Wood County but my partner has been there for a long time so he knows. It will just take some time to find all the nursing homes and major locations we go to but it will come with time.
This change also means a new partner. It is fun to work with different medics. All of them have different ways of doing things. It is about finding how they want things done and learning to read what their intentions are. It is a little bit of a challenge but it is quite fun. It also puts my skills and knowledge on the test as well. I always want to perform my best.
The dogs seems to like my new schedule. I try to take them for a walk when I get home. Then they sleep like babies over night. When I woke them up on Tuesday morning they looked at me like I was crazy. But I can tell that they like that I am home every night already.
I think this change was good for me. I am so glad I did it. I am off now today and tomorrow and have plenty of time to “recover” and do my workout. I have already mowed the yard this morning and walked my 5 mile walk and it is not even noon yet.
I will have to do some work stuff and walk the dogs, clean the house… but if I don’t do that today I have another day tomorrow to do it! So it is no reason to stress about it either. Gosh I should have done this change long time ago!!! Life lesson learned!
