You Say It’s Hot?

Covid19 is something we deal with on a daily basis today. It is a horrible virus. As much as I hate wearing masks I do it. The other day I overheard a woman complaining of having to wear mask in public. At the time I didn’t think about it, I understand it, it is warm, inconvenient and uncomfortable. It may protect you somewhat from the virus but not entirely. I am personally trying to avoid being out in the public on my time off, I see enough sick patients while at work.

But her words came back to me yesterday while at work. We had just finished a CPR. I was covered in sweat from top to toe. Fire had not been able to respond so it was just me and my partner in a hot small house without A/C. I did chest compressions on the patient for 35 minutes non stop. I had no one to relief me, my partner was doing all medications and everything else possible to save the patient. And while doing this I was not wearing a mask. I was wearing a respirator!

UT Health EMS has provided us with a respirator to protect us as much as possible from this virus. We wear this on every call. From the time we get out of the truck until we are back in the truck after leaving the patient at the hospital. Regardless of what the problem is for the patient. It can be a stubbed toe, it can be a CPR. And when we don’t have the respirator on, we have a mask. This to protect ourselves as well as everyone around us. Can you imagine how wet my nose and chin is when taking this off? Remember it is 98 degrees outside.

So for all of y’all that complains about having a mask on while shopping… suck it up buttercup! You can stay home and stay safe! I am so grateful to my job that has provided me with this mask to keep me safe while I take care of the people in need.
